Can you run a hot tub on solar power?

It's a fair question, and the honest answer is yes and no. You can absolutely run a hot tub on solar power — but not in the way most people first picture it. A solar panel won't heat your water directly at any useful scale. The clever route is to use solar to make electricity, then feed that electricity to a heat pump that multiplies it.

Here's how it really works, what you can expect summer versus winter, and what you actually need to make it add up.

Why solar can't heat the water directly

There are solar thermal systems that heat water with the sun's warmth, but for a hot tub they're bulky, expensive and hopeless on a grey British afternoon — nowhere near enough to hold 1,300 litres at 38°C on demand. So that's not the route.

Photovoltaic (PV) panels are different: they turn daylight into electricity. And electricity is exactly what a hot tub heater wants. The catch is that a resistive heater is COP 1 — one unit of solar electricity buys you just one unit of heat — so you'd need a large array to make a real dent.

The smart route: solar into a heat pump

This is where it gets good. A hot tub heat pump doesn't make heat, it moves it — pulling warmth from the outside air into your water. That means each unit of electricity delivers three to five units of heat in mild weather (COP 3–5), dropping toward 2–3 near freezing.

So the heat pump multiplies every unit of solar you generate. A single unit of sun that would give one unit of heat through a resistive element gives three, four or five through a heat pump. The seasonal truth

We won't pretend it's free all year. Solar for a hot tub is genuinely seasonal:

  • Summer. Long, bright days can cover much or most of your heating, especially with a heat pump doing the multiplying. This is when running costs get close to nothing.
  • Winter. Short, dim days won't fill the tub's needs on their own. That's expected. A battery stores what the panel does make, and cheap off-peak mains — roughly 12–15p/kWh on an Economy 7-style tariff, about half the day rate — fills the rest. So think of solar as covering a large slice in summer and a partial slice in winter, with battery and off-peak quietly covering the gap. Not magic — just sensible.

A solar powered hot tub isn't just a panel bolted on. It's a small system working together:

  • A bifacial solar panel to generate electricity (it catches light on both sides).
  • A battery power box to store it, so sun made at midday can heat at teatime.
  • A heat pump to multiply each unit into three-to-five of heat.

Realistic expectations

Done right, solar can take a serious bite out of your running costs — most of it in the warmer half of the year, a meaningful slice the rest of the time. It won't make a UK hot tub free in December, and anyone promising that isn't being straight with you. Can solar power run a hot tub for free?

In high summer it can get close, especially through a heat pump that multiplies each solar unit. Across the year, no — short winter days won't cover a tub on their own. Battery storage and cheap off-peak mains fill the gap, so the honest picture is near-free in summer and much cheaper the rest of the time.

What size solar panel do you need for a hot tub?

Less than you'd think, because the heat pump does the multiplying. A single 610W bifacial panel feeding a heat pump does far more work than a much larger array feeding a resistive heater.
